Who may attend a Rider Course?

Student Admission Requirements.

1. Basic motorcycle operator training courses are open to any person who is:

a. Physically and mentally capable of being licensed in Texas as a motorcycle operator

b. At least 15 years old on the day the course begins.

2. A person who is 15 years old, but is less than 18 years old may not enroll in a basic motorcycle operator training course unless he or she has a Class C learner permit or an unrestricted Class C, or higher, driver license.

3. A person who is under 18 must have an accompanying parent or legal guardian with them upon arrival to sign the waivers and release forms.

A person may not enroll in a basic motorcycle operator training course unless he or she has a valid driver’s license or a Texas Learners Permit with picture identification to confirm his or her identity.

Note: Students moving into Texas with a valid DL from another State may take the course with that license.

What do I need to take the course?

Per the State of Texas and Motorcycle Safety Foundation: long sleeves or jacket, Sturdy pants (No holes or tares) and must come down to the ankle (no Capri's), over-the-ankle footwear (canvas high-top tennis shoes are not acceptable), full-fingered gloves, eye protection (sunglasses or prescription glasses are okay). A positive attitude, and a willingness to learn and try new things will help you go a long way.

NOTE: In the summer months it is good to bring cold water, Gatorade, or other sports drink in a cooler. There is a designated place just off the range to set your cooler. Water bottles are provided. We recommend you wear long sleeve shirts instead of wearing a jacket over a short sleeve shirt. Drink plenty of fluid the day before and the evening between your class to stay hydrated.

NOTE: If you do not have (all) the required clothing at the time you arrive to class, you will be dismissed from class without exception. You may reschedule for another date, but there will be a $150.00 rescheduling fee. To reschedule contact our office for the Reschedule code in order to not pay the full price online.

Anything else I need to know?

Three things to consider:

1. You must be able to ride and balance a bicycle. If you haven't done so in a long time get out and ride for a while to get used to being on 2 wheels and leaning into turns again. It helps a lot!

2. There are over 170 spoken languages in the Houston metro area. If English is not a strong language for you, we welcome you to bring a translator. Maybe they can help you better understand the instructions on the range.

The MSF Basic Riders Course is only 11 hours on the training motorcycle over a two-day period. That means each day is designed to only run 5.5 hours. Breaks are provided during class time and there is not a lunch break since the range time is not a full day.

Does everyone pass the course?

Not always. The national average for passing is about 82-85% the first time through. If you cannot ride a bicycle, have balance issues, or not comfortable with dexterity of using both hands and feet simultaneously, have difficulty with extreme physical work outside, you will find learning to ride a motorcycle is very challenging.

What must be done to pass?

The classroom and written requirements are met by completing the online eCourse. Only use the link we send you after registration so you will take the correct required course.

When you arrive, you will only have range time on the motorcycle. Graduates must pass the MSF required Skill Test and we follow their program strictly.

The range exercises are conducted on a building-block approach. Students MUST successfully achieve the objective of each range exercise to advance to the next exercise. We will do our best to help every student succeed within the appointed time span set forth by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation curriculum. The RiderCoach is present to facilitate your learning. They cannot guarantee your safety on ability to learn and execute the actions adequately enough to advance to the next level. If a student fails to achieve an objective in the reasonable time allowed, the result is dismissal from the class. Remember, we're here to assist your learning. We can't guarantee it or put it to use.

Students who are disruptive, combative, abusive, or dangerous to themselves and/or others will be dismissed from the class. Students late to any session will be dismissed from the class. There are no free re-dos or refunds for anyone who is dismissed from or doesn't pass a class.

What if it rains?

Classes run rain or shine. In the event of unsafe conditions, such as severe lightning high winds hail downpours etc., we will stop the range exercises until the storm passes. Once the dangerous conditions have subsided, we will resume riding. It's always a good idea to bring some rain gear and/or a change of clothes if the weather shows a possibility of rain on your class dates!

Under severe weather conditions, if the class has to be canceled, we will work with your schedule to get you into another class.

What kind of bikes do we ride?

This is our favorite question. All of our current training bikes are light weight 2020 KTM 200 Duke’s, or a Kawasaki K125 with ABS braking, fuel injected, and ride by wire throttle control for smooth throttle operation.

Can I use my own bike or scooter?

Sure, but be sure to check with your insurance company first to make sure it's covered in the event of a mishap. You will need to sign a waiver and agree to accept responsibility for damages to your bike as a result of training. You will also need to bring proof of insurance with you to the class. You're usually better off enjoying one of our bikes unless you are more comfortable on your bike. Or if your bike is lower than one of ours and you need the height adjustment.

NOTE: If you are signing up for the One-Day Intermediate or Advanced riders course, you MUST use your own motorcycle.

Do you offer scooters for training?

Yes! We have two 2022 Honda Navi's to train scooter riders. They ride and look like motorcycles, but ride like scooters as they do not have a clutch.

Do you offer 1 on 1 training for how to ride a motorcycle?

Yes, you can take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse with one-on-one instruction on how to ride a motorcycle! Successful completion of this course will give you the same MSB-8 two-part completion form to take to the DPS office to register for your M endorsement.

You must call our office during business hours and we will try to work around our schedule as much as possible to accommodate your schedule. While we cannot run a private course at the same time as a full class, often we can work around the class days and times to fit you in. Each “Private Lesson” includes the required online eCourse and 11 hours on the bike. If we can accommodate our schedule around yours, our fee for a private class is $800 which included the use of one of our training motorcycles, a helmet if need be, and a dedicated RiderCoach.

One - On - One private classes can only be scheduled on available weekends.

Do you have any special discounts for students with financial needs?

As a 501(c)(3) organization we want to help those who are in financial need and also want to learn to ride a motorcycle or get their M endorsement. We can offer a reduced sign-up fee if you can show some form of valid documentation from the State of Texas regarding your financial need. This would include but not be limited to unemployment registration from filing for financial help. Additional requirements for a discount could include documentation from a recovery program you are currently enrolled in, or a church who has some form of Help Outreach Program.

NOTE: Choosing to be a fulltime college student and not working, does not fall under the "financial Need" criteria set forth by our Board of Directors.

For additional information call our office during regular business hours M-F between 9a – 5p. (713) 955-7646

After I graduate, how do I get my M endorsement?

Everyone who successfully passes the Basic RiderCourse receives the Texas DPS MSB-8 form in duplicate. If you are 18 and over and have an unrestricted Class A,B or C license, take the MSB-8 to a DPS office, pay their small fee and you're done! You have joined the ranks of licensed riders in Texas! Graduates 15-17 years of age will need to turn in their completion MSB-8 and pass an on-the-road skills test at the DPS. The graduate will need to provide a motorcycle for that test.
